New
Sewage Treatment Plant for Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Community
EPCO
Australia was recently awarded the contract for a new sewage treatment
plant at Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Community. Wujal Wujal is a Deed
of Grant inTrust (DOGIT) area and covers 1994 hectares of land
on the north and south sides of the Bloomfield River, Northern
Queensland. The main township area occupies the smaller DOGIT
area (116 hectares) on the northern side of the river. Wujal Wujal
has an estimated population of 470 (as of June 2001).
The
Bloomfield River Catchment lies about 200km north of Cairns and
80km south of Cooktown. It is a mountainous area with typically
high rainfall, adjacent to the coast and bordered by the Wet Tropics
World Heritage Area.
In
this remote and environmentally sensitive area the level of technical
expertise and ready access to maintenance facilities is limited.
The system recommended in this instance was an RBC plant due to
it's lower power demand, minimal maintenance and basic operator
skill requirements.
The
long term sustainability of the system and the quality of the
end result will bring visible benefits to the community and the
environment.
