Applications - Digestion

Digestion in new sewage treatment plants is becoming a rarely used process, however in large existing municipal plants digestion is an integral part of the treatment philosophy.

An
aerobic digestion is the process of breaking down the volatile matter in the sewage stream anaerobically ( without oxygen). The process produces a flammable gas which may be used for mixing the digester and also to heat the sludge in the tank via a hot waste heater and heat exchanger.

In larger plants the gas is used as a fuel for an engine driven power generator.

Aerobic digestion is an alternative method of treating the organic sludge produced in the wastewater treatment process.

The digested sludge is generally dark brown in colour with a musty odour and a flocculated appearance.

Aerobic digestion can be an integral step in the process of developing a sludge by-product for commercial garden re-use.

To be able to make an equipment recommendation best suited to your site's requirements, we need the following data:

  • Volume of sludge per day
  • Source of sludge i.e. human or animal
  • Digester sludge handling facilities.
